Pulp Fiction Tim Roth

Pulp Fiction Tim Roth
Pulp Fiction?

Any idea why Samuel L. Jackson 's character in Pulp Fiction calls Tim Roth's character "Ringo"? Is it just because he is English, and if so why Ringo?

It may be because he does not recognize the difference between Scouse and Cockney accent, or (I think) that he has misunderstood the purpose of seeing the "Ringo" has got the balls to correct him.

Outrageously violent, time-twisting, and in love with language, Pulp Fiction was widely considered the most influential American movie of the 1990s. Director and co-screenwriter Quentin Tarantino synthesized such seemingly disparate traditions as the syncopated language of David Mamet; the serious violence of American gangster movies, crime movies, and films noirs mixed up with the wacky violence of cartoons, video games, and Japanese animation; and the fragmented story-telling structures of such experimental classics as Citizen Kane, Rashomon, and La jetée. The Oscar-winning script by Tarantino and Roger Avary intertwines three stories, featuring Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta, in the role that single-handedly reignited his career, as hit men who have philosophical interchanges on such topics as the French names for American fast food products; Bruce Willis as a boxer out of a 1940s B-movie; and such other stalwarts as Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Christopher Walken, Eric Stoltz, Ving Rhames, and Uma Thurman, whose dance sequence with Travolta proved an instant classic. ~ Leo Charney, All Movie Guide mainstream. The all-star cast steps into their roles with obvious glee, and Tarantino once again uses his soundtrack to up the cool ante yet another notch, making for a motion picture event that has worked its way into our national vernacular.

Writer-director Quentin Tarantino revisits the seedier side of Los Angeles–following 1992′s RESERVOIR DOGS–with this funny, violent, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the less “classic” side of filmmaking–the potboilers and capers, the Blaxploitation flicks and gangster movies. The film interweaves three tales, told in a circular, fractured manner, which only fully connect by the time the final credits roll. The first story focuses on Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson), two hit men on duty for “the big boss,” Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), whose gorgeous wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), takes a liking to Vincent. In the second, a down-and-out pugilist (Bruce Willis), who is ordered to take a fall, decides that there’s more money in doing the opposite. The final chapter follows a pair of lovers (Amanda Plummer and Tim Roth) as they prepare to hold up a diner.Tarantino wears his cinematic influences proudly, bringing them to life in the ironically hip, self-referential 1990s. The result is a work that changed the face of independent cinema forever, making it a legitimate player in the Hollywood mainstream. The all-star cast steps into their roles with obvious glee, and Tarantino once again uses his soundtrack to up the “cool” ante yet another notch, making for a motion picture event that has worked its way into our national vernacular. To the outside world, Robert Petrovic had it all: money, power, a successful business and most importantly people with whom to share it-namely his mother and his lover.pOnly a handful of people knew who and what Robert really was, and one of those people was his son, Alex. Alex was a rising star in politics, and when he found out about his father, he disowned him.pOn a fateful July weekend, Robert begins to spiral into the darkness of despair. Within a few hours, Robert’s mother disowns him and his lover leaves him heartbroken. Everybody Robert loves abandons him. Feeling utterly alone and abandoned, Robert takes drastic action that starts his descent into darkness.pWill Robert’s family try to rescue him from the darkness? Or will they write him off for good? Will Robert find his true self and ascend back to a life where he is accepted and loved? Can he forgive those that hurt him the most?pRobert’s journey is one of great joy and unconditional love, but also horrible despair and betrayal. Only time will tell if Robert survives his journey, and only time will tell who is accepted into Robert’s life.

The soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s darkly funny crime classic Pulp Fiction manages to recreate the film’s wildly careening sense of style, violence, and humor by concentrating on the surf music that comprises the bulk of the movie’s incidental music and adding a few sexy oldies integral to the film’s story (“Let’s Stay Together,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “You Never Can Tell”). Of course, the inclusion of dialogue and Urge Overkill’s seductive cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” don’t hurt either. [The two-CD collector's edition adds a second disc consisting of an interview with Quentin Tarantino and appends four more songs to the original soundtrack: "Since I First Met You" by the Robins, "Rumble" by Link Wray, "Strawberry Letter #23" by Brothers Johnson, and "Out of Limit" by the Marketts.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Peter Green – Spoken Word; Jerome Patrick Hoban – Spoken Word; Samuel L.
