Best Comic Book / Graphic Novels!! Review of Great Comics
What graphic novels should I start reading?
I must admit – I was a bit of a literary snob, and I shunned "cartoon" – But my attitude has changed. I have since read all the Standman by Neil Gaiman and loved it! What else is out there? Please, no superhero nonsense. However, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman intrigues me for the literary allusions. V for Vendetta is on my list to read. What else is out there that is smart and different in Graphic novel genre? Thank you in advance for your help! Stand alone stories I would perf – but The Sandman was not an isolated – and I really enjoyed! Manga – I are not sure if at all. I hate to say I have a tendency to still roll my eyes at it. Has anyone ever read the children's graphic novel Bone by Jeff Smith? I could also read a good horror stuff ..
Been agreed "Maus" (a true story of the Holocaust) is incredible. And any of those you have mentioned, worthwhile. I would not completely rule out superheroes, however. "Watchmen" by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbins won a Hugo for their realistic take on the subject. "The Crow" may slightly decrease in the superhero realm, but the graphic novel by J. O'Barr is a work of art. I would also suggest Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud … which itself is a cartoon but the teacher emphasizes mechanics of comic art and writing in a very entertaining way. There are several other non-superhero series … and manga … but I got the idea you looking for stand alone adventure.

The Canterville Ghost the Graphic Novel $10.32 Oscar Wilde''s clever parody provides an entertaining twist on the traditional gothic horror story. A gauche, materialistic American family moves into the English mansion of Canterville Chase, much to the annoyance of the resident ghost. Wilde creates an unforgettable gallery of characters, from Hiram B. Otis and his children to Lord Canterville and the chain-clanking ghost Sir Simon. This brilliant and often overlooked story is a clever commentary on how Wilde saw free America challenging traditional England -- all in the guise of a charming fireside tale. This faithful graphic novel adaptation is ideal for students and any readers who want to understand and appreciate the original story. Running 130 pages and featuring stunning artwork, the book includes an illustrated character list (like a dramatis personae) and fascinating support material that details the life and work of Wilde. |
